During India's crushing defeat to South Africa in the first Test on Thursday, batsman Virat Kohli became the first batsman to score 2000 runs in a calendar year seven times. Virat Kohli scored 76 runs in 82 balls, taking him to 2006 runs in all formats in 2023. Earlier this record was jointly in the name of Sangakkara and Virat Kohli.
Virat Kohli had earlier achieved this feat in 2012 (2186 runs), 2014 (2286 runs), 2016 (2595 runs), 2017 (2818 runs), 2018 (2735 runs) and 2019 (2455 runs). Let us tell you that since international Test cricket was played for the first time in 1877, no other player has achieved this feat. Virat is the only player in the world in whose name this record has been registered.
Talking about the first test match, India had to face defeat by an innings and 32 runs. Dean Elgar played a brilliant inning of 185 runs for South Africa. Whereas, Marco Jansen scored unbeaten 84 runs. Later, due to the lethal bowling of Rabada and Burger, India was reduced to 131 runs in the second innings.
