Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Kuldeep Yadav Play Today?: Although the Indian team management maintains that they will stick to their current strategy, the situation may shift slightly following the crushing defeat in Auckland. Ahead of the fifth and final T20I against New Zealand in Hamilton on Sunday (November 1, 2026), some significant strategic changes to the playing XI could be on the cards.

Even though Team India has already secured an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series, the world champions would certainly not want to conclude the series with a defeat.

Following the loss in the Auckland T20I, discussions regarding the team combination have intensified. The captain and coach might consider bringing young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi back into the playing XI.

If the team management decides to provide an opportunity to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at the top of the order, Sanju Samson might have to sit out. The team is unlikely to shy away from experimentation in the final match, as it offers a chance to test their bench strength.

Bowling Concerns: Questions Over Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Form

The Indian bowling attack has faced some notable challenges throughout this series. Although the bowlers were highly successful in restricting the Kiwi side to under 200 runs in the second and third T20Is, their recent performances have been a cause for concern.

  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Return: Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s much-anticipated return after a long hiatus has not proven as effective as expected.
  • Bowling Dependency: The Indian team has appeared heavily reliant on Arshdeep Singh and, to some extent, Axar Patel to take wickets and maintain control over the innings.

Kuldeep or Varun's Entry: Who Will Make Way in the Playing XI?

Given the pitch and conditions in Hamilton, the team might consider strengthening its spin department. If the team management decides to include either Kuldeep Yadav or Varun Chakaravarthy in the playing XI, all-rounder Naman Dhir might have to make way and sit out.

Recently, India’s spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule clarified that both Kuldeep and Varun are fully prepared to take the field at any moment, even though they did not get an opportunity in the earlier matches of this series.

High Confidence in the New Zealand Camp

On the other hand, the New Zealand team is riding high on confidence following their victory in Auckland and the stellar performances of their players. The Kiwis will be aiming to end the series on a winning note led by the likes of Glenn Phillips (who scored a brilliant century) and Michael Bracewell (who struck an explosive half-century) to salvage some pride.

Consequently, this final encounter in Hamilton will not be an easy task for Team India, and it will be interesting to see which playing XI the captain chooses to field.
