Gagan Malik: From sweating it out on the 22-yard cricket pitch to winning the hearts of fans by portraying Lord Ram and Mahatma Buddha on television and in international cinema, actor Gagan Malik’s journey stands as an example of inspiration and dedication.
Born into a Hindu Jat family in New Delhi, Gagan Malik played cricket for nearly 12 years before stepping into the world of acting. He even represented the Delhi Ranji Trophy team, after which he ventured into the realm of television.
From the Cricket Field to Modeling and the TV Screen
Gagan, who attended Hansraj Model School during his childhood, used to listen to his mother recite the Ramayana. As a result of these values, he would always play the role of Lord Ram in his neighborhood’s *Ramlila* (a traditional enactment of the Ramayana).
In time, this very role proved to be the strongest pillar of his acting career. After playing cricket for 12 years, Gagan Malik turned toward the world of glamour and acting. During his cricketing days, he even played a first-class match for Delhi which turned out to be both his first and his last.
Then, in 2004, he won the 'Mr. Photogenic' title at the national-level 'Mr. India' competition. Following this, he worked in TV commercials for several major brands, as well as in fashion shows and music videos. He made his acting debut with the Star Plus show *Kumkum*.
Venturing into International Cinema
In 2013, Gagan Malik stepped into international cinema, earning him recognition on a global scale. He portrayed Mahatma Buddha in the Sri Lankan historical film *Sri Siddhartha Gautama*, which was produced in the Sinhala language.
The film shattered box office records in Sri Lanka and won numerous awards, including at the Delhi International Film Festival and a Buddhist film festival organized by the United Nations in Vietnam. For his compelling performance, Gagan Malik was honored with the Best Actor award at the 2014 World Buddhist Film Festival.
