It is worth noting that the ECB had appointed Brendon McCullum as the Test team's head coach in 2022. However, following a recent 2-1 series defeat against New Zealand, the board has relieved McCullum of his duties as the Test coach.

Note: Although McCullum has stepped down as the Test coach, he will continue to serve the England team in white-ball (limited-overs) cricket. Under his guidance, England recently defeated India in both the T20 and ODI series.

Since retiring from international cricket in 2008, Stephen Fleming has enjoyed a magnificent coaching career:

  • Enduring bond with CSK: Fleming has long been associated with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and other franchises within the Super Kings Group in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
  • Trophy record: As a coach, he led CSK to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies.
  • Farewell in 2026: The legendary left-hander bid adieu to his role with CSK at the end of the 2026 season.

When Will Stephen Fleming Take Charge as England Head Coach?

Although Fleming's appointment as head coach is considered almost certain, he will not join the team immediately:

1. England vs Pakistan Test Series Schedule

According to a report by 'The Telegraph', England's assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will take charge as the interim head coach for the three-match Test series against Pakistan, starting on August 19.

2. England Tour of South Africa

Stephen Fleming is likely to officially begin his tenure with the away series against South Africa in December.

Focus on Ashes 2027 Preparation

Taking charge in December will give Fleming ample time to formulate his strategy ahead of the 2027 Ashes series on home soil. He will have a total of seven Test matches to assess and shape the team before the Ashes considered sufficient time for a new coach to make his mark.
