England has announced its 15-member squad for the upcoming Test match against New Zealand at Lord's. This squad selection has taken the cricketing world by surprise, as the selectors have dropped established batsmen like Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope from the team. In their place, three uncapped players have been given an opportunity.
The 'Reset' Button in the Top Order
Crawley and Pope have paid the price for their poor performance in the Ashes series. Crawley averaged just 27 runs in the previous series, while Pope also failed to find his rhythm. The England management has now placed its trust in players who have delivered stellar performances in the County Championship.
Entry of Three New Faces
- Emilio Gay: This 26-year-old batsman from Durham has scored 552 runs at an average of 92 in Division One this season, including three centuries.
- James Rew: This 22-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman from Somerset has set a County record for scoring the most first-class centuries—12 in total—by the age of 22.
- Sonny Baker: Known for his pace, this fast bowler from Hampshire has claimed 14 wickets so far this season.
Returning Players
Rehan Ahmed, currently playing for the Delhi Capitals, makes a return to the squad. Notably, Rehan has played 10 Tests to date—all on foreign soil—making this potentially his first Test match in England. Apart from him, Matthew Fisher and Ollie Robinson have also made their return to the Test squad. Jofra Archer has currently been sidelined from red-ball cricket.
Marcus North Appointed New National Selector
Alongside the team announcement, the ECB has appointed former Australian batsman Marcus North as the new National Selector for the England team. North previously enjoyed a successful stint as the Director of Cricket at Durham.
