IPL News: Franchise denies reports of Dhoni buying a stake in CSK, though he already holds team shares; decision on new coach also pending
The franchise's senior management has firmly put to rest speculation regarding Mahendra Singh Dhoni purchasing a stake in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Recent media reports had claimed that the former Indian captain had expressed a desire to buy a stake in CSK, but the management did not agree to his terms.
Now, a top CSK official has dismissed these claims, clarifying that no such conversation ever took place with Dhoni. The official stated, "MS never asked us about this, nor did we ever discuss the issue. We also have no information suggesting he held any discussions with Mr. N. Srinivasan regarding this matter."
Does Dhoni own CSK shares?
Although the franchise has denied any major stake acquisition, Dhoni is not entirely without shares. According to information from Chennai:
- Purchase from the unlisted market: CSK is not listed on the stock exchange, but its shares can be purchased in the unlisted market through private—or off-market—transactions. Dhoni had purchased some shares when they were available for sale.
- Size of holding: According to available data, Dhoni holds over 1 lakh shares. However, this represents a very small portion (merely a fraction) of the franchise's total share capital (which comprises over 30 crore public shares).
- Shareholding pattern: The general public holds a 40% stake in the franchise, while N. Srinivasan and his family hold a controlling stake of over 55%.
- Value of Dhoni's shares: Based on current IPL team valuations, the worth of Dhoni's shares is estimated to be between ₹2.6 crore and ₹3 crore. For Dhoni, whose total net worth is around ₹1,200 crore, this amount is quite insignificant.
Dhoni to play a key role in selecting the new head coach
Despite stepping down as captain and not playing a single match last season, Dhoni continues to influence the team's decisions. The CSK management is awaiting Dhoni's stance before finalizing the new head coach:
- Return from US tour: Dhoni is currently in the US and is expected to return around September 22.
- High-level meeting: Upon his return, the management will hold a meeting with Dhoni to finalize the new head coach and discuss upcoming player trades and transfers.
- Focus on a foreign coach: According to sources, CSK is focusing on a foreign candidate who is reportedly also in talks with another franchise. The situation will become clear only after the meeting with Dhoni.
