Former Australia cricketer David Warner has been fined for drink-driving, with the incident putting his position as Sydney Thunder captain in the Big Bash League (BBL) under the spotlight.
A Sydney court fined Warner AUD 1,500 (around INR 1.02 lakh) after finding him guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol. He has also been ordered to use an alcohol interlock device in his car for the next 12 months.
David Warner Fined AUD 1,500 in Drink-Driving Case
The 39-year-old Warner appeared in a Sydney court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to the offence last month. The incident took place on Easter Sunday, when police stopped him for a routine breath test in an outer suburb of Sydney.
Warner was reportedly driving home from a friend's apartment when he was stopped by police. His blood alcohol reading was recorded at 0.104, which was more than twice Australia's legal limit.
David Warner's Alcohol Level Was More Than Twice the Legal Limit
The breath test led to Warner's arrest, with the former Australia opener later admitting the offence.
The court has now imposed a financial penalty and ordered him to use an alcohol interlock device for 12 months. The device is designed to prevent a vehicle from starting if alcohol is detected in the driver's breath.
BBL Captaincy Under Threat After David Warner's Case
The biggest concern for Warner could now be his role in the Big Bash League. He is expected to captain Sydney Thunder in the upcoming season, but the drink-driving case could lead to questions over his leadership position.
Sydney Thunder, Sydney Sixers and NSW Blues are associated with a state government campaign aimed at reducing drink-driving. Warner's involvement in such a case could therefore create an awkward situation for the franchise and its partners.

What Did David Warner's Lawyer Say?
Warner's lawyer Awais Ahmed argued that his client had already faced significant consequences following the incident.
Ahmed told Waverley Local Court that the case had received widespread international media coverage, including reports from ESPN and Al Jazeera.
He also highlighted the potential impact of the incident on Warner's commercial opportunities and future chances in T20 franchise cricket, particularly in markets such as India and Bangladesh.
Will David Warner Continue as Sydney Thunder Captain?
The court case has now resulted in a fine and a 12-month alcohol interlock requirement, but Warner's cricketing future remains an important talking point.
With the next BBL season approaching, attention will now be on Sydney Thunder and whether the franchise continues with Warner as captain.
For the former Australia star, the drink-driving case could become a significant setback both on and off the field, especially as he looks to continue his career in T20 franchise cricket.
