BCCI rejects all the suggestions of Gautam Gambhir except one

Except for one, all support staff appointments proposed by new head coach Gautam Gambhir have been rejected by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to an Economics Times story, the Indian cricket board approved only Abhishek Nayar for the batting coach position out of the choices submitted by Gambhir.

Gambhir nominated South African pacer Morne Morkel and former India bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji for the bowling coach position. Gambhir has picked Ryan ten Doeschate of the Netherlands and Jonty Rhodes of South Africa as fielding coaches.

The BCCI, on the other hand, is allegedly interested in hiring former India bowler Zaheer Khan as bowling coach, while T Dilip, Rahul Dravid's fielding coach, remains the top contender for the position.

The board's position differs from past coaches, Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid. They were each able to choose their support crew. Gambhir took over from Rahul Dravid following India's T20 World Cup victory. The former Indian opener has IPL coaching experience, having guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024 as a consultant.

His first assignment will be a trip to Sri Lanka, where India will play three Twenty20 Internationals on July 27, 28, and 30 and three One-Day Internationals on August 2, 4, and 7. India is also seeking a new T20I captain, as Rohit Sharma declared his retirement from the format following India's T20 World Cup victory.

Suryakumar Yadav is anticipated to be chosen as India's T20I skipper rather than Hardik Pandya for the forthcoming white-ball tour to Sri Lanka. Surya led India to a 4-1 T20I series victory against Australia following the ODI World Cup 2023, followed by a 1-1 tie against South Africa.
