BCCI Concerned Over Frequent Player Injuries: Major Changes Planned for New FTP to Address Workload Management; High-Level Meeting Held in Mumbai

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to take serious measures regarding the frequent injuries and hectic schedules of Indian cricket team players. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has identified the pressure of an excessive number of matches—and the resulting workload—as the primary reason for players getting injured during recent tours. To tackle this issue, the Board is now exploring ways to revise the upcoming Future Tours Programme (FTP) and ensure players receive adequate rest.

Crucial Meeting with Head Coach and Captains in Mumbai

Top BCCI officials held a review meeting in Mumbai on Thursday to address this matter. Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, Centre of Excellence (CoE) Director VVS Laxman, T20 Captain Shreyas Iyer, and ODI Captain Shubman Gill attended the meeting.

The meeting primarily focused on reviewing the defeats suffered during the tours of England and Ireland and discussing protocols for workload management. Recently, key players such as Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Kumar Reddy missed the England tour due to injuries, resulting in India losing both the T20 and ODI series.

Key highlights of Devajit Saikia's statements

  • Busy schedule the cause: Saikia stated, "A 15-member squad traveled to England following the two-month-long IPL, and 3 to 4 players sustained injuries. Continuous play impacts players' health. We are trying to find a solution within the current window."
  • Rest in the new FTP: The schedule for the upcoming Future Tours Programme (FTP) will be designed to ensure players get adequate rest and recovery time between series.
  • Practice matches in SENA countries: Before major tours to countries like South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia (SENA), players will be given opportunities to acclimatize to local conditions and play practice matches.
  • Rumors of lack of coordination dismissed: Saikia clarified that there is no lack of coordination between the team management, selectors, and the CoE; everyone is on the same page, and the focus is solely on injury management.

Roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup prepared

The Indian team has a very busy schedule over the next six months. Following the T20 series against Afghanistan, the team is set to play against the West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe, followed by the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home. The BCCI's primary objective is to prepare the best team combination for the 2027 ODI World Cup while keeping the players fit amidst this hectic schedule.
