Commonwealth Games 2026, Sarvesh Kushare: India's Sarvesh Kushare has made history at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. The 31-year-old national record holder secured a silver medal for India by clearing a height of 2.25 meters.
Tejaswin Shankar had previously won a bronze medal in the men's high jump event at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games four years ago. However, Sarvesh Kushare is the first Indian to win a silver medal in this event. Notably, Sarvesh Kushare also made his Commonwealth Games debut at Glasgow 2026.
Giving Purpose to the Lives of Dozens of Youths
Sarvesh Kushare was born on June 17, 1995, in Devgaon, located in the Nashik district of Maharashtra. His interest in high jump was sparked during his school days by his physical education teacher, Raosaheb Jadhav. He soon earned a reputation in the sport.
Sarvesh Kushare’s success made a significant impact on the youth of his village. Inspired by him, dozens of young people from the village and surrounding areas took up high jump. Their underlying goal was to secure a job through the sports quota and transform their families' lives.
Naib Subedar in the Indian Army
Sarvesh Kushare joined the Indian Army in 2016. He was appointed as a Naib Subedar in the Army's 101 Field Regiment. This job brought stability to his life and helped him further hone his athletic skills.
National Record Holder Wins CWG Silver
Looking at Sarvesh Kushare's athletics career, he won gold at the 2019 South Asian Games and a silver medal at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships.
Just last month, he broke Tejaswin Shankar's eight-year-old national record of 2.30 meters by clearing a height of 2.31 meters. He had previously finished third in his Diamond League debut with a high jump of 2.26 meters. Now, at the Commonwealth Games, he has secured a silver medal for the country with another historic jump.
