The 16th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2026 got underway on July 28 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, with 30 teams from across the country competing for national honours and promotion across divisions. The prestigious tournament will run until August 8 and promises to showcase some of India's brightest emerging hockey talents.
30 Teams Set to Battle for National Title and Promotion
This year's championship features 30 teams competing across Division 'A', Division 'B', and Division 'C'. While Division 'A' teams will fight for the national championship title, teams in Divisions 'B' and 'C' will be aiming to secure promotion to the next division.
The promotion and relegation format adds further significance to every fixture, making consistency and performance crucial throughout the tournament.
Assam vs Mizoram Kicks Off Hockey India Junior Men's Nationals 2026
The opening match of the tournament saw Assam take on Mizoram in a Division 'C' Pool A clash, marking the beginning of 12 days of exciting junior hockey action in Coimbatore.
Several talented young players will have the opportunity to impress selectors and showcase their abilities as they compete on one of India's biggest junior hockey platforms.
Tournament Format: League Stage, Points System and Shoot-Out Rules
The tournament will follow a league format during the pool stage, with teams earning:
- Three points for a win
- One point for a draw
- No points for a loss
In Division 'A' classification matches where a winner is mandatory, tied contests will be decided through a shoot-out in accordance with the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Tournament Regulations.

Speaking ahead of the championship, Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey said the tournament continues to play a vital role in strengthening India's hockey ecosystem by providing young players with a highly competitive platform to showcase their talent.
Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh added that the Junior Men National Championship remains an important milestone in the development pathway of aspiring hockey players across the country and helps prepare them for higher levels of competition.
