The Abu Dhabi T10 League is set for a fresh start as it enters its 10th season. To bring stability to a league long plagued by controversies—such as corruption and the non-payment of player fees—the Abu Dhabi government has stepped in to take direct control.
The Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) has acquired a majority stake in the league through the 'Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub.' The primary objective is to restore the league's credibility and attract long-term investors.
Reputation Tarnished by Corruption and Payment Disputes
Launched in 2017 by businessman Shaji Ul Mulk, this was the world's first T10 league; however, it has been mired in controversy over the past few years:
- Fixing and Corruption: In September 2023, the ICC charged eight individuals associated with a franchise with corruption. Additionally, US player B. Akhilesh Reddy was handed an eight-year ban for violating the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.
- Player Payments: Issues regarding players not receiving their fees on time surfaced across several seasons.
- Frequent Change of Owners: While more than 18 teams have participated over the years, only 6 to 10 have managed to remain. The constant turnover of franchise owners has severely impacted the league's brand value.
Major Government Decision: Deloitte Handling Franchise Bidding
Matt Boucher, CEO of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said, "In the past, there were challenges that tarnished Abu Dhabi's reputation. We do not want to work with short-term contracts of just one or two years. Our goal is to bring on board strong franchise owners for the long term."
The responsibility of devising the new framework has been entrusted to the renowned consulting firm Deloitte, which is managing the bidding process for new teams.
Contact with IPL Franchise Owners
Matt Boucher indicated that discussions have taken place with major investors from South Asia (India) and IPL franchise owners. IPL groups have already acquired teams in the UAE's ILT20 and other T20 leagues across the globe. If major IPL names join the Abu Dhabi T10, the league will gain global recognition and stability.
No Plans for Expansion Yet
Currently, there are no plans to increase the number of teams in the tournament beyond eight or to pursue a merger with Saudi Arabia or Dubai. The government's primary focus for the next three years will be on improving governance and strengthening the league's foundation.
