St Georges Park History

St George's Park in Port Elizabeth held the first Test to be played outside England or Australia in 1888-89 (England won by eight wickets) and in 1969-70 hosted the last Test before South Africa's 21-year isolation.

It also hosted South Africa's first rugby international against England in 1891. In 1896 it witnessed one of Test cricket's most notable games. England's George Lohmann took 7 for 38 in South Africa's first innings and then 8 for 7 in the second, bowling them out for 30.

The ground, close to the sea, is famous for the enthusiastic band that plays during Tests. In 1992 they won by a stunning 9-wicket margin, Allan Donald taking 12 for 139, on a pitch that many said was favourable to spin bowling and a nightmare for fast bowlers. But in 1997 they lost to Australia by two wickets after taking a 101-run lead on first innings, as Mark Waugh played his most valuable Test innings. Located close to the city centre, St George's Park is easily accessible by public transport, car or on foot, and like other South African grounds it is still a mixture of open space and covered seating.
