Riverside Ground History

The first significant match played at Chester-le-Street was when Durham took on the touring New Zealanders in 1992, but it was when Durham was granted first-class status in 1992 that development really began and an international standard stadium has now been built. The hard work was rewarded in 1999 when the ground hosted two matches in the World Cup and the following year England played a game of the NatWest Series. In 2003, the venue became England's first new Test ground since 1902 when it hosted a match against Zimbabwe and it now has a strong place on the international fixture list, although Chester-le-Street is yet to take a place in the category below the established grounds.

It is a long way from the train station or bus and once there, visitors face a long day in the cold. And the word exposed is: the stands around three-quarters of the ground are quite low, although this is somewhat compensated for by the fine views of Lumley Castle on the open eastern side from the west and south stands. The old ground had a limited capacity, although 5000 watched a 1972 Gillett Cup tie against Surrey. In 2000, over 15,000 watched an England ODI, although that capacity was reduced to 12000, including a considerable amount of temporary seating.
