Levi's Stadium is a stadium located in the city of Santa Clara, in the U.S. state of California. It is situated in the San Francisco Bay Area, just west of San Jose. Since 2014, it has served as the home field for the San Francisco 49ers, a team in the National Football League (NFL). The stadium is located approximately 40 miles (64 km) south of San Francisco. It is named after Levi Strauss & Co., which purchased the naming rights in 2013. In 2006, the 49ers proposed building a new stadium at Candlestick Point in San Francisco—the very site where their former home field, Candlestick Park, had previously stood. This project also included plans for improvements to retail outlets and housing facilities. It was claimed that the project held the potential to bring significant benefits to the nearby Hunters Point neighborhood, a historically underserved area. After negotiations with the City of San Francisco broke down, the 49ers shifted their focus to an alternative site in Santa Clara, adjacent to their administrative offices and training facility.
