Why Yashasvi Jaiswal Is Not Selected in IND vs NZ ODI Squad?: When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian squad for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, one major decision caught everyone by surprise: the absence of explosive young opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal from the ODI squad.
The exclusion of this consistently high-performing youngster has prompted questions from fans and former cricketers alike. Even veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his displeasure, questioning the selectors and the team management regarding this decision. Let’s take a closer look at the primary reasons why Jaiswal was not included in the ODI squad.
Focus on Red-Ball Cricket and Upcoming Test Series

The primary objective of the selectors and team management is to ensure that Yashasvi Jaiswal is fully prepared for the Test series (red-ball cricket) against New Zealand. Jaiswal has established himself as India’s primary opening batter in the Test format. The team management prefers that he focuses on red-ball practice rather than being occupied with ODI matches, ensuring he remains fresh for the Test series.
Player Workload Management Strategy

The Indian team’s international schedule is extremely demanding. Jaiswal has been playing cricket continuously across all three formats, in addition to the IPL. The selection committee and the captain believe that providing timely breaks and managing the workload of young players is essential to keeping them fit in the long run.
Strong Competition and Team Balance in the Top Order

In ODI cricket, India’s top order comprising Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli is already well-established and considered very strong. Consequently, finding a spot for Yashasvi Jaiswal in the playing XI has proven to be a challenge.
Keeping in mind the balance between backup openers and the middle order, the selectors have decided to explore other options.

Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his disagreement regarding the exclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal from the ODI squad. Ashwin believes that Jaiswal is a 'run machine' and that he should have been given an opportunity when Shubman Gill was rested for the final two ODIs of the series.
Ashwin noted that a lack of consistent match play could negatively impact a young player's rhythm and confidence. He emphasized that the experience gained from playing at the international level cannot be replicated through net practice alone.
Is Yashasvi Jaiswal Part of Future ODI Plans?

Although Jaiswal has been left out of this series, the chairman of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, and the Indian team management view him as a potential major match-winner for the future. With upcoming ICC tournaments and the ODI World Cup in mind, Jaiswal is certain to receive consistent opportunities in ODI cricket at the right time.
