Star batsman Shreyas Iyer has not been made a part of the squad selected for the first match. This decision of BCCI has surprised everyone. If we look at his previous performances, he could not show anything special in the ODI World Cup and Duleep Trophy. Recently, the 29-year-old batsman played a brilliant innings of 54 runs in the second innings against India C, but his bat was completely silent in the first innings. Iyer is captaining India D. In the first match, India C defeated his team by four wickets.
Earlier this year, Iyer was injured during the Test series against England due to which he was out of the team. Apart from this, he was dropped from the BCCI's central contracts after being unavailable for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. However, his recent performance in long formats like the Buchi Babu tournament and the first innings of the Duleep Trophy has not been impressive. Iyer also led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title. The competition for the middle order in the Indian Test team has intensified. The rise of Sarfaraz Khan and the consistent performance of KL Rahul have pushed Iyer down the order.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar recently spoke about Mohammed Shami's return and expressed hope that he could return before the Bangladesh series. However, Shami is still working on his comeback and has not been included in the Test team selected for the upcoming series. Instead, he may be seen playing for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. There is also speculation that Shami may miss at least the first Test of the three-match series against New Zealand. He has not been a part of the team for a long time.
In fact, Shami recently went abroad for ankle surgery. After successful surgery, he is now undergoing rehabilitation (process of recovering from injury). It is believed that Shami can play in one of Bengal's first two Ranji matches against Uttar Pradesh on October 11 and Bihar on October 18.
