Indian shooting legend Abhinav Bindra received the Olympic Order Award: On one hand, the games have started before the official opening of the Paris Olympics, on the other hand, a matter of pride has come up for every citizen of India. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has honoured Abhinav Bindra with the Olympic Order for his outstanding contribution to the 'Olympic Movement'. The award ceremony will be held during the 142nd IOC session in Paris on August 10, a day before the closing of the Olympics.
On receiving this award of Golden Boy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday praised veteran shooter Abhinav Bindra and said that it is a matter of pride for every Indian that he has been honoured with the 'Olympic Order'. Modi said in a post on 'X', 'It is a matter of pride for every Indian that Abhinav has been honoured with the Olympic Order. Congratulations to him. Whether as an athlete or as a mentor to upcoming players, he has made a remarkable contribution to sports and the Olympic Movement.'
On the other hand, the Home Minister wrote - Congratulations to Abhinav Bindra on being honoured with the Olympic Order award. An exemplary performer, Abhinav Bindra continues to inspire athletes with his knowledgeable guidance. All my best wishes are with him. Let us tell you that Abhinav won the gold medal in the men's 10 meter air rifle tournament in the Beijing Olympics.
The Olympic Order award is the highest Olympic honour given to an individual. The Indian shooter will be honoured at the 142nd IOC session to be held in Paris on August 10. The Olympic Order honour was established in 1975. Initially, this award was given to players who made special contributions in the Gold, Silver and Bronze categories. After a review in 1984, the IOC abolished the Silver and Bronze categories.
What is the Olympic Order and to whom is it given?: After this, it was decided that now this award will be given only to players who make special contributions to the Olympic Games in the Gold category. The IOC has also been giving this award to the heads of nations hosting the Olympics. Traditionally, the IOC has been distributing this honour at the closing ceremony of every Olympic Games.
Abhinav Bindra is the only Indian: So far 116 personalities in the world have received the Gold Olympic Order award. So far only one Indian is included in it. Abhinav has been given this honor for playing an important role in the Olympic movement. He is taking Indian sports forward with the help of Abhinav Bindra Foundation.
