Former India captain and Punjab Kings batting coach Wasim Jaffer believes that the Indian Premier League needs to abolish the impact player rule, so that more and more all-rounders can reach Indian cricket. Under the Impact Player rule, both the teams can field one substitute player each during the match, this rule was implemented in IPL 2023.
Wasim Jaffer tweeted, "I think IPL needs to end the impact player rule because this rule is not encouraging all-rounders to bowl more and there is a shortage of all-rounders and batsmen are not bowling." Which is a matter of concern for the Indian cricket team.
To use the Impact Player rule, during the toss, the captain has to give the names of 5 players along with the playing eleven, whom he wants to use during the match. Out of these, the team can give a chance to only one player as a substitute. Under this rule, now 12 players can play in the match instead of 11. The 12th player is called the impact player.
I think IPL needs to take away the impact player rule, as it's not encouraging the all rounders to bowl much and lack of ARs and batters not bowling is a major area of concern for Indian cricket. Thoughts? #IPL2024 #iplauction2024
