The schedule for two Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 matches has been changed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Rajasthan Royals game at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, which was originally scheduled for April 17, 2024, will now take place one day earlier, on April 16, 2024.
Similarly, the Gujarat Titans vs. Delhi Capitals game at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on April 16, 2024, has been rescheduled for April 17, 2024.
The schedule change happened because the local police were worried they couldn't provide enough security on April 17th. This date overlaps with both the Ram Navami festival and upcoming elections. The Kolkata Police explained this in a letter to the cricket board president.
Changing the schedule is complicated. It affects the teams' travel, TV broadcasts, and people who have already bought tickets. A senior member of the cricket board stressed how many things need to be considered when making these changes. If the local police can't guarantee safety, then the schedule has to be adjusted.
April 18 was first suggested as a backup date for the Kolkata match due to the limitations. Nevertheless, this choice seems problematic given that the general elections' first round began on April 19. Elections are expected to take place on this day in a number of West Bengal regions, including Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri, thus April 16 is a better option.
