A mega auction is to be held at the end of this year for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. During this time all 10 teams will be formed completely afresh. They have the right to retain only 4 players. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also started talking to all 10 franchises regarding this auction.
But even before this mega auction, the franchises have started fearing losing players due to a rule. The franchises have also informed the BCCI about this fear. This rule is to conduct a mega auction every three years.
In fact, just before the mega auction, the BCCI is talking to the franchises about retaining the players, their purse budget and the format-rules of the mega auction. Meanwhile, a report has surfaced, claiming that the franchises have placed some of their demands.
IPL mega auction will be held every 5 years: All the franchise owners agree that the mega auction should be held every 5 years instead of every 3 years. According to ESPNcricinfo, a senior official of a franchise said that there are many advantages of holding the mega auction every 5 years instead of 3. The longer gap will give teams time to prepare young players.
The franchises that have been associated with IPL since 2008 have made a big investment for it. They have built academies to find talented players from the grassroots level and prepare them for the international level. Holding a mega auction every 5 years will encourage teams to continue doing so, whereas there is a fear of losing players due to a mega auction every 3 years.
In fact, this mega auction has also happened twice in IPL history at an interval of 4 years. For the first time, the mega auction was held after 4 years due to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) returning from suspension after 2 years. This happened in 2018 after 2014. Then due to Corona, the mega auction was held in 2022 after 4 years instead of 2021.
4 to 6 players will be retained: Apart from these, the franchises have also suggested to BCCI to change two other rules. Teams should get a chance to retain 6 players instead of 4. Apart from this, there is also a demand to give the option of 8 Right to Match (RTM) cards.
Let us tell you that this was used in the 2017 auction, when teams were allowed to retain a maximum of five players by combining retention and RTM. RTM is the card that allows teams to buy their players again for an amount equal to their highest bid after the bid is over.
In this meeting, franchises demanded changes in the Right to Match (RTM) option from IPL officials. Teams want it to be increased to eight before the mega auction. If this happens, teams will be comfortable in re-inducting their old players in the team by matching the highest bid.
