India T20I Squad: Saturday (June 6) marked a major shake-up and the dawn of a new era in Indian cricket. The BCCI selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, announced the Indian T20 squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as the 2026 Asian Games. The most surprising decision in this announcement concerned the captaincy.

The biggest news from this selection is the appointment of Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of the Indian T20I team. He takes over the leadership role from Suryakumar Yadav. What comes as a shock is that, alongside being removed from the captaincy, Suryakumar Yadav has been completely dropped from the T20I squad.

Shreyas Iyer last played a T20I match for India in December 2023. However, his stature in the T20 format has grown significantly in recent times. He led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to an IPL title, became one of the most expensive players in IPL auction history, and transformed his game over the last two years to emerge as one of the tournament's most aggressive batters. Now, he is set to return in the 'Blue Jersey' as a leader.

15-Year-Old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Makes History in India Cricket Selection

The second major and historic headline from this selection is the inclusion of 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the squad. Hailing from Bihar, Vaibhav has amassed a mountain of runs with his bat in IPL 2026 and Under-19 cricket.

Securing a spot in the senior Indian T20 squad at such a young age clearly demonstrates that the selectors are placing a big bet on youth to build the team of the future. This tour could prove to be a historic turning point in Vaibhav's international career.
