Why Team India Selected Unfit Players Despite Options?: A three-match T20 series between India and Afghanistan is scheduled to be played at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium from September 13 to 17. The BCCI has announced a 15-member squad for this series, with Shreyas Iyer handed the captaincy and Tilak Varma appointed as the vice-captain.
However, the squad announcement has sparked a new controversy. Four key players have been included, but their availability depends entirely on fitness clearance. These include Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Harshit Rana. In the official BCCI list, their names are marked with an asterisk (*) and the note 'subject to fitness clearance'.
Why Did Team India Risk Unfit Players When Alternatives Were Available?

This decision by the selection committee has raised several questions. While selecting a star player and waiting for their fitness isn't inherently wrong, was it necessary to take such a risk in this situation?
- Match Fitness vs Medical Fitness: At the international level, being medically fit isn't enough; being fully prepared to handle match pressure is a different matter altogether.
- Injury History Risks: All four players have struggled with injuries in the past. Returning directly to a fast-paced format like T20 after a long break could increase their risk of re-injury.
Potential Backup Players Who Deserved a Chance

India has no shortage of bench strength. Had the selectors wished, they could have tested players who are fully fit and in good form:
- Fast Bowling Options: Instead of Jasprit Bumrah or Harshit Rana, the pace attack could have included Mohammed Siraj, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, or the young sensation Mayank Yadav. Delhi's young fast bowler Prince Yadav was also an excellent option.
- All-Rounder Alternatives: Krunal Pandya was a strong contender as a spin-bowling all-rounder to replace Washington Sundar or Nitish Reddy, while a specialist fast-bowling option could have improved the team's balance.
The inclusion of 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the squad demonstrates faith in young talent; so, why weren't fully fit new faces given a chance in the bowling and all-rounder departments?

For now, the BCCI has clarified its stance by making the fitness condition public. All eyes are now on the final fitness report from the Centre of Excellence (CoE).
If all four players regain fitness in time and perform brilliantly, the selection committee's strategy will be hailed as a masterstroke. However, if fitness issues resurface during the series, the selectors' haste will inevitably be questioned.
