ICC T20 World Cup 2024: USA defeats Canada by 7 wickets

At the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, the United States secured their first ICC T20 World Cup 2024 victory thanks to Aaron Jones's blistering knock and Andries Gous's crucial half-century.

In the ICC Men's T20 World Cup opening game, Canada batted magnificently to register 194 for 5 against the USA after being asked to bat first.

Canada maintained their momentum because of the fifties from Navneet Dhaliwal (61 off 44 balls) and Nicholas Kirton (51 off 31 balls), and they were able to compile a formidable total at the end thanks to a 16-ball 32 cameo from Shreyas Movva. Movva gave Canada's innings the much-needed boost with 21 runs in the last over.

Corey Anderson, Harmeet Singh, and Ali Khan claimed a wicket for the United States of America. The USA's best chase in Twenty20 Internationals was 169, so if they want to make history on the first night of this huge event, they will have to do some serious damage. Canada's 194/5, which beat Netherlands vs. Ireland's 193/4 in 2014, is currently the highest total by an associate side at the men's T20 World Cup.

Five records were broken during the USA vs Canada match

South Africa holds the second-highest successful run chase in T20 World Cup history, having pursued 206 against the West Indies in 2007.

Equal the second most sixes in a T20 World Cup innings

Jones struck his first six in the ninth over, bowled by Nikhil Dutta, following a very calm start. After that, the right-hand hitter was unstoppable as he attacked both seamers and spinners in an inning that included ten sixes.

These ten hits were the same as the number of sixes Chris Gayle got in the opening match of the first-ever T20 World Cup in 2007. Jones now holds the equal second-most sixes in an innings of a T20 World Cup game, whether it be women's or men's. Gayle would go on to beat his record nine years later in 2016.
