At the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, the United States secured their first ICC T20 World Cup 2024 victory thanks to Aaron Jones's blistering knock and Andries Gous's crucial half-century.
In the ICC Men's T20 World Cup opening game, Canada batted magnificently to register 194 for 5 against the USA after being asked to bat first.
Canada maintained their momentum because of the fifties from Navneet Dhaliwal (61 off 44 balls) and Nicholas Kirton (51 off 31 balls), and they were able to compile a formidable total at the end thanks to a 16-ball 32 cameo from Shreyas Movva. Movva gave Canada's innings the much-needed boost with 21 runs in the last over.
Corey Anderson, Harmeet Singh, and Ali Khan claimed a wicket for the United States of America. The USA's best chase in Twenty20 Internationals was 169, so if they want to make history on the first night of this huge event, they will have to do some serious damage. Canada's 194/5, which beat Netherlands vs. Ireland's 193/4 in 2014, is currently the highest total by an associate side at the men's T20 World Cup.

With a successful pursuit of 195, the United States currently owns the record for the most successful run chase in T20 World Cup history. England set the record for the most successful run chase in the T20 World Cup with 230 against South Africa in 2016. South Africa holds the second-highest successful run chase in T20 World Cup history, having pursued 206 against the West Indies in 2007.
Team | Opposition | Year | Total |

South Africa | West Indies | 2007 | 208/2 |

Jones struck his first six in the ninth over, bowled by Nikhil Dutta, following a very calm start. After that, the right-hand hitter was unstoppable as he attacked both seamers and spinners in an inning that included ten sixes.
These ten hits were the same as the number of sixes Chris Gayle got in the opening match of the first-ever T20 World Cup in 2007. Jones now holds the equal second-most sixes in an innings of a T20 World Cup game, whether it be women's or men's. Gayle would go on to beat his record nine years later in 2016.
Player | Team | Opponent and Year | Sixes |
---|---|---|---|
Chris Gayle | West Indies | England (2016) | 11 |
Chris Gayle | West Indies | South Africa (2007) | 10 |
Aaron Jones | USA | Canada (2024) | 10 |
Deandra Dottin | West Indies | South Africa (2010) | 9 |
The second-best stand for the third wicket in a Men's T20 World Cup match was the 131-run partnership between Jones and Gous, which came off 58 balls. When Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan of England combined for 152 runs on the third wicket against Sri Lanka in 2014, they set a record.
Team | Opposition | Year | Partnership | |
---|---|---|---|---|
0 | England | Sri Lanka | 2014 | 152 |
1 | USA | Canada | 2024 | 131 |
2 | South Africa | West Indies | 2007 | 120 |
3 | Australia | Pakistan | 2014 | 118 |
4 | Bangladesh | West Indies | 2007 | 112 |
In the T20I format, Jones and Gous's partnership was the greatest the USA has ever had for any wicket. It should be noted that three of the top five partnerships in USA T20I cricket have against Canada.
Batter 1 | Batter 2 | For the wicket | Partnership | Opponent and Year |
---|---|---|---|---|
Andries Gous | Aaron Jones | 3rd | 131 | Canada (2024) |
Sushant Modani | Gajanand Singh | 5th | 110 | Ireland (2021) |
Corey Anderson | Nitish Kumar | 4th | 104 | Canada (2024) |
Monank Patel | Steven Taylor | 1st | 104 | Canada (2024) |
Aaron Jones | Ian Holland | 1st | 91 | Bahamas (2021) |
Jones needed just 22 balls to achieve his fifty. This marked the quickest half-century ever achieved by a batter hailing from North America.
In addition, Jones and Gous' 131-run partnership was the quickest to 100 runs in a T20 World Cup match. Together, they scored 100 runs in just 42 balls.
