DC vs GT, IPL 2023 Highlights: Miller and Sai power Gujarat to victory

The Gujarat Titans took on the Delhi Capitals in the 7th match of the IPL 2023 season, with the Titans winning the toss and electing to bowl first. Capitals skipper David Warner top-scored with a 37-ball 32 while Sarfaraz Khan scored a 34-ball 30. Axar Patel played a terrific cameo of 36 runs off just 22 balls before getting out in the final over to Mohamed Shami. The pitch was described as flat with a slight tinge of grass, and the Capitals played their first home game of the season after 2019. The Titans featured in their first away match of the tournament.

Delhi Capitals faced defending champions Gujarat Titans in their first IPL home game since 2019. Capitals had work to do, as evidenced by their season-opening clash with Lucknow Super Giants. They suffered a big defeat as they suffered a batting collapse with fast bowler Mark Wood taking a five-for. Their bowling, especially the pace attack, appeared a bit weak. However, their opponents were the title holders, the Gujarat Titans, who had started their season with an impressive win over Chennai Super Kings.

Squads

Before we dive into the match highlights, let's take a look at the full squads for both teams:

Gujarat Titans playing 11: Wriddhiman Saha(w), Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Hardik Pandya(c), David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, Joshua Little, Yash Dayal, Alzarri Joseph

Delhi Capitals playing 11:Prithvi Shaw, David Warner(c), Mitchell Marsh, Rilee Rossouw, Sarfaraz Khan(w), Axar Patel, Abishek Porel, Kuldeep Yadav, Aman Hakim Khan, Anrich Nortje, Mukesh Kumar

The Gujarat Titans won the toss and elected to bowl first, putting the Delhi Capitals into bat. Capitals skipper David Warner opened the innings with Prithvi Shaw, but both fell early to leave the team struggling at 22/2 in the fourth over. The Titans' bowlers, led by Mohammed Shami, kept the pressure on, and Capitals struggled to build any momentum. Sarfaraz Khan and Rilee Rossouw put on a brief partnership, but both fell within two overs of each other.

Axar Patel came in and provided some much-needed impetus to the innings, scoring a quickfire 36 off just 22 balls. However, he was dismissed in the final over by Mohammed Shami, leaving the Capitals with a below-par score of 137/7 from their 20 overs.

In reply, the Titans got off to a strong start, with Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill putting on 47 runs for the opening partnership. Saha fell for 25, but Gill continued to score freely.

The Build-up

After a disappointing season opener against the Lucknow Super Giants, the Delhi Capitals (DC) were hoping to bounce back in their first home game of the season against the defending champions, Gujarat Titans (GT). Meanwhile, the Titans were looking to continue their winning momentum after their impressive victory over the Chennai Super Kings.

The pitch at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi was described to be flat with a slight tinge of grass, making it ideal for batting. The toss was won by the Gujarat Titans captain, Hardik Pandya, who elected to bowl first.

DC's Batting Collapse

DC got off to a slow start as their top order struggled against the Titans' bowling attack. Captain David Warner top-scored with a 37-ball 32, while Sarfaraz Khan scored a 34-ball 30. However, they failed to convert their starts into big scores, and DC soon found themselves in trouble.

The Titans' bowlers kept the pressure on DC, and the middle order failed to provide any resistance. The likes of Mitchell Marsh, Rovman Powell, and Kuldeep Yadav were dismissed cheaply, and DC found themselves reeling at 112/7 at the end of the 17th over.

Miller and Sai Sudarshan Power GT to Victory

In response, the Gujarat Titans got off to a steady start, with openers Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha adding 36 runs for the first wicket. However, DC's bowlers struck back, with Anrich Nortje dismissing Gill for 18 and Khaleel Ahmed getting rid of Saha for 23.

The Titans' middle order also struggled, with Rahul Tewatia and Hardik Pandya dismissed cheaply. However, South African David Miller and uncapped Indian batter B Sai Sudharsan stepped up to the plate.

Miller, who came in for injured Kane Williamson, played a crucial knock of 62 runs off 43 balls, including five fours and three sixes. He was well supported by Sudharsan, who scored 47 runs off 32 balls, including four fours and two sixes.

The duo shared a partnership of 103 runs for the fifth wicket, which all but sealed the victory for the Titans. Although Axar Patel dismissed both Miller and Sudharsan in the 19th over, the Titans had already done enough to secure the win.
