The West Bengal Assembly election trends are beginning to take shape, with leads available for around 160 out of 293 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is showing a strong presence in North Bengal, indicating a repeat of its 2021 performance pattern.

North Bengal Holds the Key: 60 Crucial Seats in Focus

North Bengal, comprising nearly 60 key constituencies, is once again emerging as the decisive battleground. Early trends suggest BJP is leading in over half of these seats, putting the party in a strong position.

For BJP, winning here is critical to its overall strategy, while for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), it is a test of political dominance.

District-Wise Battle in West Bengal: Where the Fight is Intense

Several districts are witnessing tight contests, making the race highly competitive:

  • Cooch Behar & Alipurduar - BJP making early gains
  • Jalpaiguri & Darjeeling - Neck-to-neck fight
  • Uttar & Dakshin Dinajpur - High voter impact seats
  • Malda Region - Crucial swing factor

The urban-rural voter mix in these districts is expected to heavily influence the final outcome.

2021 vs 2026: Familiar Political Patterns Emerge

In the 2021 Assembly elections, TMC won over 90 seats in North Bengal, while BJP secured around 59. Despite TMC’s dominance, BJP’s strongest performance came from this region.

The current trends suggest history could be repeating itself, making the contest even more intense.

Record Voter Turnout: Over 92% Participation

The first phase saw massive voter engagement, with turnout exceeding 92%.

  • Dakshin Dinajpur: ~95% turnout
  • Cooch Behar: ~94.7% turnout
  • Birbhum: ~93.8% turnout

Such high participation is likely to play a decisive role in shaping the election results.

Violence During Polling Raises Questions

Amid high voter turnout, incidents of violence were reported:

  • A BJP candidate was allegedly attacked in Kumarganj (Dakshin Dinajpur)
  • Clashes between political workers reported in Murshidabad

The Election Commission has sought detailed reports, highlighting concerns over election-day security.

What’s Next: All Eyes on Final Results

With North Bengal emerging as the kingmaker, the early advantage for BJP has intensified the contest. However, TMC remains firmly in the race. As counting progresses, the big question remains - will BJP maintain its lead, or will Mamata Banerjee turn the tide once again?
