On Tuesday, September 17, the Supreme Court will resume its suo motu hearing regarding the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor inside Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. This case, which has sparked widespread protests from junior doctors in Kolkata, has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. The CBI is set to submit a confidential status report on the progress of the investigation to the Supreme Court during the hearing.

Besides investigating the heinous crime, the CBI is also examining former principal Sandip Ghosh and other individuals related to potential financial irregularities within the hospital. These allegations add another layer of complexity to the ongoing turmoil surrounding the case. The junior doctors’ relentless protests over safety concerns have gripped the city, with the state’s healthcare services severely impacted.

Protests with the West Bengal Government

The protests began as junior doctors demanded better working conditions, safety protocols, and justice for their deceased colleagues. Their demonstrations have garnered support from senior doctors and other healthcare professionals. Despite the Supreme Court's direction on September 9, which asked the protesting doctors to resume their duties, the junior doctors have refused to return to work, citing unfulfilled demands by the state government.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud had assured the doctors that the state government would take no adverse action against them if they resumed their duties. However, the junior doctors stood firm, continuing their "cease work" protest. Over 7 lakh outpatient services have been affected as the healthcare system faces mounting pressure.

The West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, engaged in late-night talks with the protesting doctors. Although initial talks stalled over the demand to live-stream negotiations, a common ground was eventually reached on Monday night. One of the protestors described the removal of key officials, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner, as a moral victory, but the doctors remain committed to their protest until all promises materialize.

Supreme Court's Role and Government Measures

The Supreme Court has played a pivotal role in mediating the conflict between the protesting doctors and the West Bengal government. During the previous hearing, the court urged the state to build confidence among the doctors by addressing their safety concerns. In response, the state government has introduced measures, including increased CCTV surveillance at medical facilities. The state government is financing these steps in an attempt to restore normalcy in the healthcare sector.

As the Supreme Court reconvenes, all eyes are on the outcome of both the rape-murder investigation and the ongoing protest. The junior doctors' movement has highlighted significant concerns about healthcare safety and governance, and the case's developments are being closely watched nationwide.
