Márquez replaces Javier Aguirre, who resigned following a 2-3 loss to England in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In an official statement, the FMF noted that Márquez's appointment is part of a pre-planned, long-term strategy. The objective is to build upon the work done during the previous World Cup cycle, further improve the national team's performance, and ensure better preparation for upcoming international tournaments.

Rafael Márquez's Football Career:

Rafael Márquez is considered one of Mexico's most successful footballers. During his international career, he played 148 matches for the country and captained the team in several major tournaments. Since July 2024, he had been serving as an assistant coach on Javier Aguirre's staff. Now, he has been entrusted with full responsibility for the national team for the first time.

Javier Aguirre's third tenure lasted approximately two years, during which he led the team to significant successes. Under his leadership, Mexico won the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the Nations League titles in 2025. During his term, the team played a total of 50 matches, recording 33 wins, nine draws, and eight losses. The Federation stated that Aguirre has left a legacy that will always be remembered in the history of Mexican football.

The FMF also thanked Aguirre on social media, stating that his achievements would forever remain a part of Mexican football history. Following the defeat against England, Aguirre had hinted in his farewell statement that Rafael Márquez would be the next coach. He said, "I hugged Rafael Márquez. Four magnificent years lie ahead of him, and a strong foundation is in place for the team."
