The central government has banned 18 OTT platforms publishing obscene and pornographic content. The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said that these platforms had been warned several times before. Along with this, the government has also blocked 19 websites, 10 apps and 57 social media handles.
According to the statement issued by the ministry, regarding the blocked OTT platforms, it has been said that they used to broadcast obscene, indecent and derogatory content towards women.
These platforms have been banned by taking action under Section 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 292 of the IPC and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
One of the blocked OTT apps has been downloaded more than 1 crore times on Google Play Store. Along with this, two apps have been downloaded 50 lakh times. Along with this, these apps also use social media platforms to promote their content. These OTT platforms have more than 32 lakh users on their social media accounts.
