Rising actor Rohit Basfore, recently seen shooting for the much-anticipated web series The Family Man 3, was tragically found dead near the scenic yet treacherous Garbhanga Waterfalls on Sunday afternoon, April 27. His sudden death has not only shocked the entertainment industry but has also raised serious concerns, as the actor's family suspects foul play.
Rohit Basfore was emerging as a fresh talent in the Indian entertainment industry, gaining traction after being cast in The Family Man 3, the latest instalment of the hit Amazon Prime series starring Manoj Bajpayee. With his roots in Assam, his inclusion in the series has brought immense pride to the Northeast. But his journey was tragically cut short when he reportedly slipped and fell into the Garbhanga Waterfalls while on a picnic with nine colleagues.
According to the Rani Police Outpost, the incident occurred around 2 PM on Sunday. The police were informed at 4 PM and, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), reached the spot by 4:30 PM. After a two-hour search operation, Basfore's body was recovered around 6:30 PM. Initial investigations suggest an accidental fall, and no immediate evidence of foul play has been found by officials.
While authorities lean towards accidental drowning, Rohit Basfore’s family alleges a darker narrative. They claim that the 28-year-old was lured to a remote location by acquaintances. Most alarmingly, they revealed that his phone was switched off by noon, hours before the accident. The family also confirmed that Rohit did not know how to swim, raising further suspicions.
'We want justice. Our son was taken to a secluded place, and the story doesn’t add up. Why was his phone off so early in the day? And why was he near a waterfall when he couldn’t swim?' a family member said, urging the authorities to conduct a deeper investigation.
As news of Rohit’s death spread across social media, fans and celebrities began posting tributes and raising demands for transparency in the investigation. The hashtag #JusticeForRohitBasfore began trending within hours, with many calling on the makers of The Family Man 3 to issue a statement.
Several actors from the North East have also voiced their grief, highlighting the dangers of neglect and the need for stronger protection for regional artists in the industry.
The police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination, and further investigations are ongoing. Sources close to the team say that the testimonies of all nine individuals who were present at the picnic will be recorded. A forensic analysis of the phone and the location timeline is also underway.
Police have yet to rule out foul play entirely, stating that the investigation is being pursued from 'all possible angles' in light of the family's allegations.
