Bundesliga 2026–27

The calendar for the 2026/27 season has been finalized. Compared to the previous year, the league season will start a week later due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Consequently, the opening match of the Bundesliga is scheduled for August 28, 2026, while Bundesliga 2 will kick off three weeks earlier, on August 7, 2026.

Details regarding these and other dates are outlined in the schedule adopted by the respective executive committees of the German Football Association (DFB) and the DFL (Deutsche Fußball Liga). Following Bundesliga Matchday 14 and Bundesliga 2 Matchday 16 (December 18–20, 2026), both leagues will pause for the winter break. Bundesliga matches will resume on January 8, 2027, while Bundesliga 2 will restart a week later, on January 15, 2027.

The Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, contested between the Bundesliga champion and the DFB Cup winner, will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The first round of the DFB Cup (August 21–24, 2026) will also begin that same weekend. The DFB Cup matches for the two teams participating in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup have been scheduled for September 1 and 2, 2026. The DFB Cup final will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2027, at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. May 1, 2027 (Labour Day), falls on a Saturday; in accordance with an agreement reached with the Conference of German Interior Ministers, no league matches will be played that weekend. Instead, Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 matches will be played midweek on March 2–4, 2027.

Eighteen clubs are participating in the Bundesliga this season. Following promotion, Schalke, Elversberg, and Paderborn have reached the top division. Elversberg is playing in the Bundesliga for the first time, becoming the 59th distinct club in the competition's history.

Bundesliga 2026–27 format

The Bundesliga consists of a total of 18 teams. Each team plays against the others both at home and away, resulting in a total of 34 league matches per team. The team finishing at the top of the standings at the end of the season is crowned the Bundesliga champion. Teams finishing in the lower positions face the risk of relegation (being sent to a lower league).

Teams finishing in 17th and 18th place are directly relegated to Bundesliga 2, while the team finishing in 16th place competes in a two-legged relegation play-off against the team that finishes third in Bundesliga 2.
