IND vs WI T20 Series:Indian T20 captain Shreyas Iyer believes that 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has the temperament and ability to make a significant impact on Indian cricket, but he emphasized that the young player's development should not be limited solely to his on-field performance.
Ahead of India's five-match T20 International series against the West Indies, Iyer stated that he has consciously tried to build a personal bond with the youngster by discussing life beyond cricket.
Shreyas Says Vaibhav Will Get His Chance at the Right Time
With preparations for the next T20 World Cup underway, Suryavanshi has been part of the Indian squad; however, Iyer indicated there is no need to rush into assigning a major role to the youngster.
Noting the presence of India's established World Cup-winning opening batsman, the captain stated that Suryavanshi would get his opportunity when the time is right.
Iyer told JioStar,I keep talking to Vaibhav about things outside of cricket because everyone else only talks to him about the sport, and we know how talented and capable he is as a player.
That is why he gets more excited talking about his lifestyle, his family, and what he does or doesn't do; he seems much more at ease and authentic when discussing these topics.
Vaibhav described as calm
The Indian T20 captain further remarked that he is a very calm individual but plays explosive cricket on the field an interesting contrast. He is a charming and delightful person to interact with, and it is great having him in the dressing room.
I know his time will come; after all, we are currently playing with openers who have won the World Cup, and he needs to get game time. He is still part of the 15-man squad. Undoubtedly, when his moment arrives, he will make a significant mark on Indian cricket.
The captain also clarified that the young player's current standing behind the experienced openers does not imply a lack of faith in his abilities.
After leading the T20 International team to a gold medal at the Asian Games, Shreyas Iyer will now aim to maintain that momentum and clinch the five-match series against the West Indies early.
