Steve Smith Record: Steve Smith Makes History in Test Cricket, Breaks World Record for Most Catches by a Non-Wicketkeeper
Australian cricket team star batsman Steve Smith has achieved a historic milestone in Test cricket. During the match against South Africa at Kingsmead, Smith set a new world record for the most catches taken by a non-wicketkeeper in the history of Test cricket. Surpassing England's star batsman Joe Root, Smith has now risen to the top of the Test fielding charts.
Record Broken by Catching David Bedingham
This significant achievement occurred on the third day of the match. South African batsman David Bedingham attempted a shot off a fast delivery from captain Pat Cummins, but the ball took the edge of the bat and flew towards the slips. Stationed at second slip, the 37-year-old Smith displayed remarkable agility, leaping brilliantly to his left to secure the catch. This marked his 221st Test catch in his 126th match.
Earlier in the same innings, Smith had equaled Joe Root's record of 220 catches off a delivery from Nathan Lyon. Standing in the slips, he anticipated South African captain Temba Bavuma's intention to play a reverse-sweep, moved rapidly to his right, and successfully completed a difficult catch off a top-edge.
Becomes No. 1 Fielder, Surpassing Legends
Renowned for his unique batting style, Steve Smith has once again demonstrated his extraordinary concentration and lightning-fast reflexes in slip fielding. Surpassing legends like Joe Root, Rahul Dravid, and Mahela Jayawardene reflects his long and illustrious career, as well as his remarkable consistency across all types of conditions.
