SA vs AUS: South Africa squad announced for ODI series against Australia, Gerald Coetzee returns, Rabada out
South Africa has announced its 16-member squad for the three-match home ODI series against Australia, starting on September 24. This series marks the return of fast bowler Gerald Coetzee to the ODI squad after a long hiatus; he had not played a 50-over international match since the 2023 ODI World Cup due to injury struggles. He has been included in the team after being declared fully fit following a recent bowling stint in a four-day match against Bangladesh 'A'.
Injury blow to the pace attack; Rabada and Burger sidelined
South Africa's fast-bowling unit is currently grappling with injury issues:
- Kagiso Rabada and Nandre Burger are ruled out of the series due to injuries.
- Lutho Sipamla, who was selected for the Namibia tri-series, is also unavailable due to a hamstring issue.
- Prenelan Subrayen, Rubin Hermann, and Dewald Brevis have not been included in the squad this time around.
David Miller and Tristan Stubbs return; Markram out of the first match
Experienced batters David Miller and Tristan Stubbs have returned to the squad. Meanwhile, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has clarified that all-rounder Aiden Markram will only be available for selection for the second and third ODI matches.

Head Coach's Statement on 2027 World Cup Preparations
South Africa's head coach Shukri Conrad stated that with approximately one year remaining until the 2027 World Cup, this series is crucial for determining the team composition.
"From a batting perspective, we have focused on building a middle order that is aggressive yet capable of handling pressure and taking the innings deep. Kagiso Rabada's injury is unfortunate, but it opens up an opportunity for other players to step up. It is pleasing to see Gerald Coetzee back, and he is bowling with good pace."— Shukri Conrad (Head Coach)
