PSL 2027 Schedule: 12th Season of PSL to Begin on March 18; Dates to Clash with IPL Again
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially announced the dates for the 12th season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2027) on Thursday, October 8. The tournament is scheduled to take place between March 18 and May 2, 2027. The league will retain the same format following its expansion to eight teams.
Dates to Clash with IPL Again
This schedule—finalized during the PSL Governing Council meeting held in London on September 1—means the PSL and the Indian Premier League (IPL) schedules will clash once again. Although the schedule for IPL 2027 has not yet been released, the league's 20th season is also expected to commence in mid-March.
Risk of Player Pull-outs
The clash of dates could pose challenges for PSL franchises. In the previous season, several overseas players withdrew from their PSL contracts to join the IPL as replacement players:
- Spencer Johnson: Withdrew citing personal reasons after being directly signed by Quetta Gladiators and subsequently joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
- Dasun Shanaka: Left Lahore Qalandars to join Rajasthan Royals.
- Blessing Muzarabani: Terminated his contract with Islamabad United to join Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), resulting in a two-year ban from the PSL.
Success of PSL 2026 and the Introduction of the Auction
In the 2026 season, the PSL moved away from the player draft system and adopted a player auction format for the first time. In the final held at Gaddafi Stadium, Peshawar Zalmi defeated the debutant team Hyderabad Kingsmen in front of a record crowd of 32,461 spectators, clinching the title after a long wait of nine years.
With the window for the 2027 season now finalized, the processes for direct signings, player retentions, trade windows, and the auction are set to begin soon.
Statement by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi:
"HBL PSL 11 showed the world what this league is capable of—thrilling matches, record-breaking attendance, and record broadcast figures. PSL 12 will raise the bar even higher. We are fully prepared to host another spectacular season featuring all eight teams."
