PAK vs SL ODIThe three-nation ODI series in Pakistan got off to a positive start for the host team. The first match of the series featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England was held in Rawalpindi.
In this opening encounter, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 37 runs. Powered by a brilliant century from Salman Agha and a three-wicket haul from captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan successfully defended their total of 305 runs to secure the victory.
Salman’s century powers Pakistan to a big total
In the match played on Sunday, October 18, Pakistan lost both their openers with only 32 runs on the board. Following this, Babar Azam (45) and debutant wicketkeeper-batter Saad Baig (39) stitched together a 74-run partnership.
However, Babar once again fell victim to a short-pitched delivery. Subsequently, Salman Agha settled in and, with some support from the remaining batters, steered the team into a strong position.
Salman, who was recently removed from Pakistan's T20 captaincy, scored his fourth career ODI century off 84 balls before getting out after an innings of 107 runs.
It was on the back of this innings that Pakistan reached a total of 305 for 8 in their 50 overs—a score that proved sufficient for victory. For Sri Lanka, fast bowler Ishan Malinga claimed the wickets of four batters, including Babar.
Shaheen Rips Through Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s start was far from ideal, as they lost 4 wickets by the time they reached 91 runs—two of which were claimed by captain Shaheen. It was then that Janith Liyanage (60) and Pavan Rathnayake (79) forged a rapid 119-run partnership, bringing Sri Lanka back into the contest. However, the stand was broken at 210, and Shaheen subsequently put an end to Dasun Shanaka’s aggressive batting display. Before long, the entire side was bowled out for 268 in 48.1 overs.Pakistan’s Next Match Against England
The next match of the series is scheduled for October 20 in Rawalpindi, where Pakistan will face England. This encounter will pose a genuine challenge for Shaheen Afridi’s side, as the England team led by Harry Brook is currently in excellent form and enjoying a winning streak. Consequently, the true significance of this victory for the Pakistani team can only be properly gauged by how they perform against England.
