A five-match ODI series between India and New Zealand is set to begin on November 4; however, the BCCI and the team management have decided to keep Bumrah out of this series entirely.

  • Fully Fit Bumrah: According to reports, Bumrah is now fully fit, but the management intends to preserve him for the crucial red-ball (Test) series, which begins on November 19.
  • Long Absence: It is worth noting that Bumrah has not played a Test match since November of last year.
  • Top Priority: According to a source within the BCCI, it would not be advisable to field Bumrah in the ODI series, only to have him immediately transition into the Test series.
The team's primary priority is to keep Bumrah, who is returning from an injury, fresh specifically for the Test series.

Likely to Feature in Unofficial Test for India A

Although Bumrah may not be part of the main ODI series, he could take the field for 'India A' to get some match practice.

  • A series of three unofficial Test matches between India 'A' and New Zealand 'A' is set to begin on October 24.
  • According to a report by the "Times of India", Jasprit Bumrah might participate in the third unofficial Test, scheduled from November 7 to November 10, which would help him regain his rhythm for red-ball cricket.

Jasprit Bumrah is currently focusing closely on his fitness and bowling:

  • Training in Ahmedabad: Bumrah has begun his preparations in Ahmedabad, aiming for a strong comeback to red-ball cricket.
  • Reporting to the CoE: He is expected to report to the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru by the end of this month.
  • Tour Details: A five-match T20 series between India and New Zealand begins on October 22, while the Indian ODI and Test squads are scheduled to depart for New Zealand on October 28.

Strategic Decision Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and Future Test Series

Due to a knee injury, Bumrah had previously missed the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka earlier this year, for which Aaqib Nabi was named as his replacement in the Indian squad.

The team management is looking beyond just the New Zealand series, keeping in mind the prestigious five-match Test series against Australia, which is scheduled for next year. This is the reason why Jasprit Bumrah’s workload is being managed with great care, so that the team can continue to benefit from his exceptional bowling for a long time to come.
