Disciplinary action has been taken against Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the ongoing second Test (ICC World Test Championship) between India and Sri Lanka. Jayasuriya has become the third player to be penalized in this match.
Striking the boundary cushion proves costly
The incident occurred on the final ball of the match's fourth day (Monday, August 24) after Jayasuriya was dismissed. While returning to the pavilion, he angrily struck the boundary cushion (boundary wedges) with his bat.
- Rule Violation: The ICC found him guilty of breaching Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel (abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an international match).
- Penalty: On the recommendation of match referee Andy Pycroft, Jayasuriya received an official reprimand, and one demerit point was added to his disciplinary record.
- This was Jayasuriya's first offense in the last 24 months. He admitted to the offense, thereby negating the need for a formal hearing.
Action taken against a third player in the Colombo Test
Prior to Jayasuriya, action had already been taken against Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando on the very first day of the match.
- A heated exchange took place between the two after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal in the 17th over of India's first innings; during the altercation, their heads collided.
- Following this on-field clash, the ICC fined both Jaiswal and Fernando 25% of their match fees and added one demerit point to each of their records.
