Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who came to bat after winning the toss, gave a steady start to Team India. Both added 40 runs for the first wicket. Rohit Sharma's bat once again failed to work. Playing ahead with the score at 103/2, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer led the innings brilliantly. There was an important partnership of 90 runs between the two in which Iyer scored a total of 27 runs. Shreyas Iyer once again missed playing a big innings. At the other end, Jaiswal scored the second century of his Test career and his first century on Indian soil. After the dismissal of Shreyas Iyer, debutant Rajat Patidar came on the field. He batted carefully and formed a good partnership with Jaiswal.

Team India looked to be in a strong position till tea time due to Yashasvi Jaiswal's brilliant century. In the last session of the day, Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his brilliant innings and was supported by Rajat Patidar. There was a partnership of 70 runs between the two batsmen. Rajat Patidar scored 32 runs and his wicket was taken by Rehan Ahmed. After this, Akshar Patel supported Jaiswal but Akshar Patel returned to the pavilion after scoring 27 runs. Wicketkeeper batsman KS Bharat also flopped after scoring 17 runs. Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is unbeaten after scoring 179 runs. He hit 17 fours and 5 sixes in his innings. Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed took 2-2 wickets for England.
