Yashvir Singh pulled off a remarkable feat with his final throw, successfully winning a medal in his very first Commonwealth Games appearance. To stay in contention for a medal, the young Indian athlete needed to deliver the best performance of his career and he succeeded in doing just that.
Yashvir Singh Makes History with Final Throw
The presence of World Athletics stalwarts in the Glasgow final made the competition incredibly tough. Yet, amidst this elite field, Yashvir Singh managed to carve out a distinct identity for himself.
At one stage, Grenada's former world champion Anderson Peters held the third spot, while Yashvir appeared to be out of medal contention right up until the final throw; however, he delivered a spectacular performance under pressure.
Pouring all his strength into his sixth and final attempt, Yashvir hurled the javelin. As it landed at a distance of 85.41 meters, the stadium erupted in thunderous applause.
This was not only a career-best performance for him, but that historic throw also brought India the glory of a double-medal finish on the podium with Neeraj Chopra claiming silver and Yashvir Singh securing bronze.
A Journey Beginning in Devsar, Bhiwani
Born on October 22, 2001, in Devsar village of Haryana's Bhiwani district, Yashvir Singh drew inspiration for sports from his own home. His father, Rai Singh, was a national-level javelin thrower and a Railways coach.
His father always harbored a sense of regret over not receiving proper technical guidance during his own competitive days. Consequently, he resolved to achieve through his son the milestones that had eluded him.
Rigorous Training Began at Age 14
In 2015, at the age of just 14, Yashvir began training in javelin throw under his father's guidance. He spent hours sweating it out to perfect his run-up, grip, and release techniques. This dedication led him to win gold medals in the Under-18 national championships on two consecutive occasions. He later made headlines at the Indian Under-20 Federation Cup by shattering the long-standing meet record held by star athlete Neeraj Chopra.
Subsequently, in 2022, he crossed the 80-meter mark for the first time. He secured his spot for the Commonwealth Games by recording a throw of 83.72 meters in June 2026. Now, he has fulfilled his father's dream in his very first Commonwealth Games appearance.
