Suryakumar Yadav T20 Captaincy: Under Suryakumar Yadav's leadership, Team India won the 2026 T20 World Cup title. Now, the departure of the World Cup-winning captain is considered all but certain.

End of an Era? Suryakumar Yadav Set to Lose India T20I Captaincy

It appears almost certain that India's T20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, may be stripped of the captaincy. Surya played his last T20 match for Team India against New Zealand—the very match that served as the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Under Suryakumar's leadership, the Indian team successfully clinched the T20 World Cup title. Now, ahead of the next T20 match, not only is Surya's captaincy in jeopardy, but his place in the team also appears to be at risk.

The Indian team is set to play its next T20 series during a tour of Ireland, commencing on June 26. This series will consist of two matches. Subsequently, the Indian team will take the field to play a T20 series against England. When selecting the squad for these two series, discussions regarding Surya's future are inevitable.

Poor Form Poses a Challenge for Suryakumar Yadav-

It is worth noting that Surya's poor batting form appears to be creating difficulties for him. Surya was not even included in the list of probable players for the Asian Games. Now, the question arises: who will be handed the reins in Surya's place? Instead of just one, three Indian players have emerged as contenders for the captaincy to succeed Suryakumar. The final decision will be made by Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar.

Who Are the 3 Contenders?-

Citing sources, reports have listed the names of three players currently being discussed for the captaincy role. The first name is Axar Patel, who served as the vice-captain during the previous T20 World Cup. Additionally, Ishan Kishan's name has also been mentioned. The third name to surface is that of Sanju Samson. However, Sanju's performance raises questions, as he has not been performing consistently. It will now be interesting to see who becomes India's next T20 captain.

It remains to be seen whether Surya will be allowed to retain the captaincy for the Ireland series, or if the 'Men in Blue' will take the field with a new captain starting from this very series. As of now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not released any official information regarding this matter.
