Delhi Capitals have appointed former India captain Sourav Ganguly as their new head coach ahead of IPL 2027. Ganguly will replace Hemang Badani, who served as the team's head coach for the previous two seasons.
The decision comes after Delhi Capitals failed to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2025 and IPL 2026. The franchise is now preparing for a major overhaul of its coaching setup, with Ganguly expected to bring a fresh approach to the team.
Sourav Ganguly Takes Charge as Delhi Capitals Head Coach
Sourav Ganguly has been associated with the Delhi Capitals franchise since 2019. He has previously worked with both the men's and women's teams in a director's role.
However, IPL 2027 will be a new chapter for Ganguly as he takes charge as the franchise's head coach. His previous experience with Delhi Capitals and his coaching stint in the SA20 could prove valuable for the team.
Ganguly recently served as the head coach of Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 league, where he guided the team to the final.
Why Did Delhi Capitals Replace Hemang Badani?
Delhi Capitals finished fifth in IPL 2025 and sixth in IPL 2026, missing out on the playoffs in both seasons.
Following these results, the franchise decided to make a change at the top of its coaching structure. Hemang Badani has now been replaced by Sourav Ganguly, who will be tasked with rebuilding the team and helping Delhi challenge for the IPL 2027 playoffs.
Delhi Capitals Set for Major Coaching Staff Changes
The changes at Delhi Capitals are expected to go beyond the head coach position.
The franchise has decided not to retain bowling coach Munaf Patel, assistant coach Ian Bell and team director Venugopal Rao. Ganguly is reportedly keen to work with his own support staff.
As a result, Delhi Capitals could announce several new appointments before the start of IPL 2027.
Will Yuvraj Singh Join Delhi Capitals' New Coaching Team?
Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has also been linked with Delhi Capitals' new coaching setup.
There is speculation that Yuvraj could join Ganguly as part of the franchise's support staff. However, there has been no official confirmation about his appointment yet.
If Yuvraj does join the team, his experience as a former India match-winner could add another strong dimension to Delhi Capitals' coaching group.
What Did Sourav Ganguly Say After Becoming Head Coach?
Sourav Ganguly expressed his excitement after being appointed Delhi Capitals' head coach.
The former India captain highlighted his long-standing relationship with the franchise and said Delhi Capitals have always been close to his heart. He also made it clear that his aim will be to build a strong and fearless team.
Ganguly's appointment gives the franchise an experienced cricketing figure who already understands the team's setup and environment.
Rishabh Pant Returns to Delhi Capitals for IPL 2027
Delhi Capitals will also have Rishabh Pant back in their squad for IPL 2027.
Pant spent the previous two seasons with Lucknow Super Giants and led the franchise during that period. However, after the conclusion of IPL 2026, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants completed a major trade involving Pant and spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
As part of the deal, Pant returned to Delhi Capitals for ₹15 crore, while Kuldeep Yadav moved to Lucknow Super Giants for ₹13.5 crore.
Pant, Axar and KL Rahul to Work Under Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly will have several prominent Indian players to work with at Delhi Capitals.
The team is expected to feature Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel and KL Rahul as key players in IPL 2027. Pant's return adds another major Indian star to the squad and could also have an impact on the team's leadership structure.
With these experienced players available, Ganguly will have a strong core around which he can build his team.
Can Ganguly Take Delhi Capitals Back to the IPL Playoffs?
Sourav Ganguly's appointment marks a new beginning for Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2027.
The franchise has failed to reach the playoffs in the last two seasons and will be hoping that the coaching changes can help turn its fortunes around. Ganguly's experience, combined with a revamped support staff and a squad featuring players such as Pant, Axar Patel and KL Rahul, gives Delhi a fresh opportunity.
The biggest challenge for Ganguly will be to turn the team's potential into consistent performances and guide Delhi Capitals back into the IPL playoff race.
