The Indian Premier League is administered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). New controversies surface in this league from time to time, and whenever a player is observed violating the rules, strict penalties are in place to address such situations. Recently, incidents involving the use of e-cigarettes have garnered significant attention; however, what action would be taken if a player were to step onto the field to play while under the influence of alcohol?
Can Cricketers Play in the IPL While Intoxicated?
First, it is essential to understand whether or not a player is even permitted to enter the field of play while under the influence of alcohol or after consuming any banned substances. India's National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) keeps a close watch on the players, and the BCCI adheres to the regulations set forth by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). While it is not mandatory for players to undergo a drug test prior to every match in the IPL, NADA and WADA reserve the right to issue a surprise notice to a player at any time of the day. In response to such a notice, the player is required to report—at the designated time—to the specific location they have been instructed to visit.
Testing for the consumption of narcotics or alcohol can be conducted using urine samples, blood, or even saliva. The BCCI adopts a very strict stance regarding the consumption of banned substances; therefore, any player would undoubtedly think twice—or perhaps ten times—before stepping onto the field under the influence of alcohol.
Nevertheless, if a player does take the field while intoxicated, what penalties might they face? The act of entering the field under the influence of alcohol or any narcotic substance is deemed an "attempt to bring the game into disrepute" under Article 2.21 of the BCCI's Code of Conduct. For such misconduct, a player's match fee may be deducted, or they may be issued demerit points. Additionally, they may receive a formal warning. Furthermore, since NADA and WADA keep a close watch on such incidents, these agencies may impose a ban on the player ranging from a few weeks to several months, or even several years. If a player is repeatedly found to be under the influence of alcohol, they could face a lifetime ban in accordance with anti-doping regulations.
