Scotland fast bowler Brad Wheal retires from cricket; decision taken at age 30 due to persistent injuries

Scotland fast bowler Brad Wheal has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 30. He reached this difficult decision after struggling with a series of serious injuries. Wheal stated that his body is no longer capable of enduring the rigorous demands and physical strain associated with fast bowling.

International and domestic career

Brad Wheal made his international debut for Scotland against Hong Kong in 2016. He played 44 matches for Scotland across ODIs and T20 Internationals, taking a total of 51 wickets. He was part of Scotland’s squads for four T20 World Cups—including the 2026 edition, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. He played a key role in Scotland’s historic victories against Bangladesh in 2021 and the West Indies in 2022.

In domestic cricket, Wheal played 131 matches across all formats for the county side Hampshire. He was a member of the Hampshire squad that won the Royal London One-Day Cup in 2018 and the Vitality Blast in 2022.

A Difficult Decision Forced by Injuries

Announcing his retirement, Wheal said, "It has been a matter of pride for me to represent Hampshire and Scotland, but recurring injuries have forced me to make the decision to retire. I have suffered stress fractures in my back four times, and I recently underwent knee surgery. Ultimately, my body can no longer withstand the physical demands of fast bowling."

Cricket Scotland Expresses Gratitude

Steve Snell, Head of Performance at Cricket Scotland, praised Wheal’s contributions, noting that Brad has played a significant role in Scottish cricket over the past decade. His contribution to Scotland’s progress on the international stage has been invaluable, and participating in four T20 World Cups is, in itself, a remarkable achievement.
