Former New Zealand Women's Head Coach Bob Carter Appointed as West Indies Batting Consultant; CWI Entrusts Him with Major Responsibility
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has appointed Bob Carter, the former head coach of the New Zealand women's cricket team, as its new batting consultant. The 66-year-old Carter has signed an initial one-year contract. His primary mandate will be to elevate batting standards across the Caribbean region and strengthen the local coaching infrastructure.
Carter will work across men's, women's, and age-group (Under-19 and junior) levels. This appointment is particularly significant for West Indies as the team prepares for the Men's ODI World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for February-March 2027.
Assumed Role on September 1; To Tour Six First-Class Regions
Carter officially assumed his role on September 1. As part of his initial assignment, he will tour all six major West Indies first-class regions—Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Leeward Islands, and Windward Islands—this month.
During this period, he will work directly with players and local coaches.Upon assuming the role, Bob Carter said:
"West Indies cricket has a magnificent history of producing world-class batters. My task is to build a strong foundation for the new generation so they can become world-class players in the future. My primary focus will be on honing the skills of both players and coaches."
30 years of extensive coaching experience
England-born Bob Carter brings nearly 30 years of coaching experience:
- In 2004, he joined the New Zealand men's team as an assistant to John Bracewell (2004–2009).
- From 2012 to 2014, he served as an assistant coach for the New Zealand men's team alongside Mike Hesson.
- From 2019 through the 2022 T20 World Cup, he served as the head coach of the New Zealand women's team.
- From 2012 to 2025, he was also associated with New Zealand Cricket as a high-performance coach.
CWI Director explains the true objective of the appointment
Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe, highlighted that the West Indies are set to participate in six major ICC tournaments over the next 24 to 30 months.
Bascombe stated that the success of Carter's appointment would not be measured solely by the performance of the top six batters after 12 months; rather, the true benchmark would be the competence of the regional coaches he trains in teaching batting skills in the future.
