According to a report, the BCCI is divided on this matter, and a decision could be reached at the AGM scheduled for September 18.
Agarkar's job might be saved
According to a report, the BCCI is currently divided into two camps regarding Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the men's committee: one group favors retaining him, while the other believes the time has come for a change.
Journalist Abhishek Tripathi made this claim in a social media post. It suggests that the threat looming over Agarkar appears to have been averted for now, partly due to the stance taken by BCCI officials.
In fact, reports of a lack of rapport between Agarkar and Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir had been circulating for several months; these claims were neither confirmed nor denied.
Furthermore, Agarkar's job was also at risk following Team India's performances in Ireland and England, as well as controversies surrounding Rohit Sharma's selection. Amidst this, the name of former batter and Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman came into the spotlight.
What is the sentiment within the BCCI?
According to recent reports, there is satisfaction regarding the rapport between Gambhir and Agarkar within the BCCI, and a consensus is emerging to retain Agarkar in his role. A section of the board's decision-makers believes that the Chief Selector and Head Coach are working in excellent coordination, and therefore, Agarkar should be retained until the 2027 World Cup.
However, there is another group of officials who feel it is time to move on from Agarkar and that Laxman should be brought forward for this responsibility.
This faction believes that Laxman should be given the additional role of Chief Selector as he is well-suited for it while continuing as the Head of the Centre of Excellence (CoE). A final decision on this matter could be reached during the BCCI's crucial meeting scheduled for September 18.
