AUS vs SA: Major blow for Australia; Josh Inglis ruled out of South Africa ODI series due to finger fracture
Bad news has emerged for the Australian cricket team amidst the ongoing ODI series against South Africa. Star wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis has been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs against South Africa due to a fractured finger.
Inglis sustained the injury to the index finger of his right hand while wicketkeeping during the first ODI played in Durban.
Inglis batted despite the pain
Despite the injury, Josh Inglis showed great resolve during the first ODI. He not only continued wicketkeeping throughout the match but also came out to bat at number 4 during the run chase, scoring 3 runs off 8 balls. However, given the severity of the injury revealed by scans, he has been ruled out of the upcoming ODIs scheduled for September 27 (Johannesburg) and September 30 (Potchefstroom).
Doubt over participation in Test series
Following his withdrawal from the ODI series, Inglis is returning to Perth for medical assessment and treatment. He now faces the challenge of regaining fitness before the crucial three-match Test series begins in Durban on October 9.
- Selection as backup keeper: Although Alex Carey is Australia's primary Test wicketkeeper, Inglis could still feature in the playing XI as a specialist batsman if he recovers in time.
- Cricket Australia's statement: Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that his availability for the Test series will depend on further assessment and the progress of his recovery. No replacement has been announced for the ODI series so far.
Australia suffered a 67-run defeat in the first ODI against South Africa, leaving them trailing 0-1 in the series. In this context, Inglis's withdrawal is considered a major blow for the Australian team.
