Cummins, Hazlewood, and Lyon—who missed the Sydney Test in January due to injury—have returned to full fitness. The return of these stalwarts has resulted in Michael Neser, who performed impressively during the Ashes, being left out of the squad. Along with Neser, Todd Murphy and Brendan Doggett have been named as standbys.
Chief selector George Bailey said:
The national selection panel is delighted with the return of Pat, Josh, and Nathan. They have worked hard with the sports science and medical teams over the past few months. "Although this is a 13-player squad, other players will continue to get opportunities given the busy schedule over the next 12 months."
Who takes the No. 5 spot after Usman Khawaja's retirement?
The No. 5 position has opened up following veteran batter Usman Khawaja's retirement from Test cricket. However, the selectors have not given a chance to any new batter.
Both Cameron Green and Beau Webster are likely to remain part of the playing XI. Green is expected to bat at No. 5, while Webster and Alex Carey will handle the lower order. Josh Inglis has been included in the squad as a backup batter and wicketkeeper.
Opening pair and top order
Opener Jake Weatherald has been retained in the squad. He will share opening duties with Travis Head; the duo shared four half-century partnerships during the Ashes. Marnus Labuschagne is set to play at No. 3, and Steve Smith at No. 4.
Tough competition among bowlers: Boland vs. Hazlewood
35-year-old Josh Hazlewood has been plagued by recurring injuries (hamstring and Achilles) over the past few years and missed the Ashes series. His return has now created uncertainty regarding Scott Boland's selection. Boland has taken 82 wickets at an impressive average of 18.58 in his 19 Test matches and has remained fully fit.
Captain Pat Cummins also played only one Test in the last year due to a back injury. Meanwhile, Nathan Lyon is returning to the field following hamstring surgery.
