Following this disappointing performance, the selectors have brought in left-handed batsman Matt Renshaw.

While Weatherald was dropped, the other opening batsman, Marnus Labuschagne, managed to retain his spot. Labuschagne had played innings of 3 and 31 runs in the Darwin Test. The Australian team management hopes that the opening pair of Labuschagne and Renshaw will succeed in providing the team with a strong and solid start in the second Test match to be played in Mackay.
