Weatherald scored 23 runs in the first innings and was dismissed for a duck (0) in the second. Following this disappointing performance, the selectors have brought in left-handed batsman Matt Renshaw.

Matt Renshaw is making a comeback to the Australian Test squad after a gap of three years. He played his last Test match against India in Delhi in February 2023. While Weatherald was dropped, the other opening batsman, Marnus Labuschagne, managed to retain his spot. Labuschagne had played innings of 3 and 31 runs in the Darwin Test. The Australian team management hopes that the opening pair of Labuschagne and Renshaw will succeed in providing the team with a strong and solid start in the second Test match to be played in Mackay.
