Huge setback for Ireland as veteran Laura Delany is ruled out of the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 due to injury. 18-year-old Alice Tector named replacement.In a massive blow to Ireland's upcoming ICC Women's T20 World Cup campaign, veteran player Laura Delany has been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. Eighteen-year-old batting all-rounder Alice Tector has been drafted into the squad as her replacement.
While the exact nature of Delany's injury remains undisclosed, Cricket Ireland confirmed it is severe enough to sideline her from both the mega-event and the preparatory tri-series against the West Indies and Pakistan, scheduled to kick off on May 28.
A Massive Blow for Ireland
Delany’s absence leaves a gaping hole in the Irish setup. The 33-year-old is Ireland's most experienced T20I cricketer, boasting 132 caps, 1,659 runs, and 96 wickets. Her seasoned all-round capabilities and leadership on the field will be sorely missed as Ireland faces a daunting group stage.
Opportunity Knocks for Alice Tector
While Tector is yet to earn her maiden T20I cap, the youngster is no stranger to the international arena. She has represented Ireland in 5 ODIs since making her debut against Sri Lanka in 2024.
Commenting on the squad change, Graeme West, Director of High Performance at Cricket Ireland, said:
"We are all devastated for Laura — she's one of the toughest competitors that has ever played for Ireland Women, and we wish her well with her recovery. Alice herself has had to deal with injuries over the last 12 months but has shown a great temperament since returning to play in 2026."
Road Ahead: A Challenging Group Stage
Ireland has been placed in a demanding group alongside hosts England, West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Scotland. The Girls in Green will kick off their T20 World Cup campaign against Scotland at Old Trafford on June 13.
